Why buy an electric or pneumatic chain hoist?

a. They make your workforce more productive thru better ergonomics and safety.
b. Electricity and or compressed air are readily available in most plants.
c. They are typically more compact than a wire rope unit.
d. Chain hoists are typically less expensive than wire rope hoists.
e. Most units have an overload slip clutch to prevent over capacity loads.
f. Especially in the lower capacities, high speeds are available to help increase your productivity
g. Chain typically is a more durable and less expensive option when compared to wire rope.
h. When compared to wire rope units, a chain hoist often has better headroom
i. Most electric chain hoists are H-4 duty cycle.
j. A simple chain change-out and you can increase your lift.
k. Hook mounting allows the units to be easily changed out around the plant.
l. Chain hoists are true vertical lift –always. A wire rope hoist must be double reeved to be true vertical lift.

In addition to the above an air hoist also gives you the additional advantages:

m. Duty cycle is almost continuous H-5 duty
n. Infinitely variable control is standard on air chain hoists—better spotting
o. Air hoists are typically smaller than electric chain hoists
p. The Air hoist is inherently spark resistant. Add specific features such as stainless chain, and bronze hooks to meet a specific environment.
q. Air hoists can be used in high heat areas they adversely affect an electric hoist

Additional Considerations:

  • For optimum hoist life consider that the ball bearing life for the hoist varies inversely according to the cube of the load. An example is a one ton hoist operated at a mean effective load of ˝ ton will have a ball bearing life 8 times that of a hoist used at its maximum capacity. Obviously this is a major consideration if repair cost and downtime are issues.

  • If a 2-speed electric hoist is to be used, make sure to confirm the voltage as these are not typically reconnectable to other voltages as single speed hoists. For example a 230-3-60 voltage hoist cannot be wired to run on 460-3-60 on a two-speed motor.

  • Always use an approved filter lubricator with your air hoist. It should be located as close as possible to the hoist.

  • People often use NEC code to specify an environment for an air hoist to operate. Keep in mind that the NEC is an electric code and does not apply to air hoists—but it can provide direction for the engineering department to apply the correct features. When specifying a hoist make sure that you request additional spark resistant items such as stainless chain, bronze hooks, stainless chain container, bronze wheels, etc. if mechanical spark resistance is also required.

We do not look at your chain hoist as a commodity purchase, but an important part of your material handling solution!
