Custom End Effectors and End of Arm Tooling for Industrial Material Handling

What Is an End Effector?

At Ergonomic Partners, we design and manufacture custom end effectors — the specialized gripping tools, also called end of arm tooling (EOAT), that attach to manipulator arms, lift assists, and robotic systems to handle parts safely and efficiently. The right end effector design depends on your part's size, weight, shape, and material — whether you need to grip from the outside, expand inside a core, lift with vacuum, or clamp with magnets. Selecting the proper end of arm tooling ensures operators can position loads precisely while reducing injury risk and improving cycle time.

Beyond manipulator arms and lift assists, custom end of arm tooling serves as the critical interface in every robotic automation system. Because end effectors are core components of every robot, they dictate the overall speed, payload capacity, and reliability of your automated lines — making the right EOAT design one of the most consequential decisions in any automation project.

We engineer custom gripper applications tailored to highly specialized manufacturing processes. Our part-handling pneumatic and mechanical grippers are frequently integrated into automated CNC machine tending robots and cobot cells to streamline lathe and mill loading and unloading. For end-of-line packaging, we develop high-flow vacuum cup assemblies and mechanical clamp end effectors utilized in high-speed robotic palletizing systems for boxes pails and bags. Additionally, we provide custom torch tooling and specialized fixture-side clamping systems engineered for seamless integration with robot weld cells and automated welding systems.

End Effector Types We Design and Build

We engineer the following end effector and robotic gripper types for industrial material handling:

Mechanical Tooling
Mechanical Tooling

Mechanical lift assists are a cost-effective solution for your everyday lifting needs, especially when handling similar parts. These manipulators securely hold the parts, enabling operators to move loads safely and easily. Our mechanical lift assist devices are capable of handling parts ranging from 25 pounds to 400 pounds. In some cases, the weight of the part provides enough gripping force to lift heavy loads.

Magnet Grip Tools
Magnet Grip Tools

Magnetic end effectors are the right tool when you're handling ferrous steel parts a quarter inch thick or thicker. Our engineers select between air-powered permanent magnets and electromagnets based on your specific application — and we custom-design the mounting geometry to match your robot arm or manipulator. These magnetic grippers handle loads up to 1,000 pounds, from large flat steel sheets to cylindrical tubes. For safety, our magnetic tooling includes an option to prevent mid-air release, and if you're running an electromagnet, we can add battery backup to protect the load in the event of a power loss.

Vacuum Tooling
Vacuum Tooling

Vacuum end effectors handle flat or slightly curved non-porous parts — doors, windows, boxes, bags, and round ingots — without a mechanical grip that can mark or deform the surface. Our vacuum tooling uses adjustable cup arrays so the same end effector can accommodate multiple part sizes on the same line. During the design and approval process, we work directly with you to configure vacuum circuits, check valves, and load presence release circuits for your safety requirements. Many of our vacuum end effectors also allow the operator to rotate the part to any orientation needed for the next operation.

Expanding Mandrel
Expanding Mandrel

Expanding mandrels are ideal for handling large rolls of materials with a solid ID core. Our range of core handling equipment includes portable or stationary roll handling, hoist-based roll lifters, and roll turners. All our standard designs are available in various configurations for different applications. We also provide custom engineering services to accommodate any specific application needs. Our ID grip manipulators can handle loads of up to 1,000 pounds, making them perfect for safely moving heavy spools.

C-Frame Tooling
C-Frame Tooling

C-Frame manipulators are designed for handling square or cylindrical shaped objects. These lifting devices use hydraulic or pneumatic power to clamp parts, allowing an operator to reach into a machining center or rack. They are especially useful when an overhead obstruction prevents the operator from placing the tool directly over the target. Our C-Frame tooling robotic end effectors can handle parts ranging from 25 pounds to 500 pounds. For heavy loads, our gripper safety circuit prevents the operator from accidentally releasing the part mid-air, thanks to the intuitive circuitry on the tooling.

Standard and Side Gripper Tools
Standard and Side Gripper Tools

Standard grip tools are perfect for round and similar shaped parts ranging from 20 pounds to 400 pounds. These manipulators allow you to pick up and rotate parts in several different orientations, making positioning of awkward loads easy. Side grip tools are ideal when parts are close to each other. These lift-assist tools allow you to reach behind or next to a part with only one side of the tool moving. Our side grippers come in several different options including manual 180-degree rotation, powered vertical pitching, and powered pitch, tilt, and rotate. Our engineering staff can custom design tooling to fit your exact needs.

Custom EOAT Engineering - Our Design Process

Every end effector and EOAT assembly we build starts with your application - not a catalog. Our engineering team reviews your part geometry, weight, material, cycle rate, and any surface finish or contamination constraints before specifying tooling. From there, we design, fabricate, and test the end effector in-house, then integrate it with your manipulator arm, cobot, or industrial robot.

We are a custom end effector manufacturer, not a distributor. That means we can accommodate non-standard part shapes, multi-part pick cycles, and environment-specific requirements like wash-down duty, high-temperature exposure, or weld spatter resistance. Whether you need a single custom vacuum end effector for a CNC cell or a complete robotic EOAT system for a high-speed palletizing line, we engineer it to fit your exact process.
